The Role of AI in Email Marketing: A Smart Marketer’s Guide

Written by Amy Judge | May 19, 2025

In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an indispensable tool for marketers aiming to enhance their email marketing strategies. In fact, 63% of marketers use AI tools for email marketing

AI offers a myriad of opportunities to optimize campaigns, engage audiences, and drive conversions. At Wild Fig Marketing, we’re committed to leveraging innovative solutions to help businesses thrive. Let’s explore the role of AI in email marketing and how it can revolutionize your efforts!

1. Ideation and Planning: Fueling Creativity With AI

Generating fresh and relevant content ideas can be a daunting task. AI simplifies this process by analyzing industry trends and customer behavior to suggest compelling topics tailored to your audience's interests.

How To Utilize AI for Content Ideation:

  • Understand your audience: Input details about your target market, including demographics, preferences, and known pain points. The AI tool can then provide insights into what your audience is currently interested in or other things they may be struggling with that you hadn’t thought of.
  • Generate topic ideas: Share information about your business goals and services, and AI can suggest blog topics, email themes, or campaign ideas that resonate with your audience and intersect their pain points.

2. Analyzing and Optimizing: Enhancing Performance With AI Insights

AI tools can evaluate your existing email campaigns to identify areas for improvement, ensuring your messages are as effective as possible. For example, I use AI to analyze email marketing analytics by uploading the data to quickly get an overview of performance.

Optimization Strategies:

  • Content analysis: Upload your email drafts, and AI can assess readability, tone, and engagement potential, offering suggestions to enhance clarity and impact.
  • Quality list assessment: By analyzing subscriber interactions, AI can rank the quality of each email address, helping you clean up your list (e.g., removing inactive subscribers) so you can hone your marketing efforts.
  • Scheduling optimization: AI can determine the best times to send emails to individual subscribers based on their past behavior, increasing the likelihood of opens and clicks.

3. Content Creation: Crafting Compelling Messages With AI Assistance

Writing persuasive and personalized emails is crucial for engagement. AI tools like ChatGPT can serve as valuable assistants in drafting content that captures attention and drives action.

Content Creation Tips:

  • Drafting emails: Provide AI with key points or objectives, and it can generate a draft email that you can refine to match your brand voice.
  • Subject lines and preheaders: AI can suggest catchy subject lines and preheader text designed to increase open rates.
  • Tone and sensitivity: When dealing with sensitive topics, AI can help craft messages that are empathetic and appropriate, ensuring your communication is respectful and effective.

Sometimes words are hard and I get stuck on what to say, especially if it’s a sensitive topic. I’ll take my message and ask ChatGPT to soften it or I’ll give ChatGPT the situation and a draft of my content and ask them to write or rewrite the email for me. It gives me a starting point and then I edit or revise from there. ~Kari Switala, Wild Fig Marketing Founder

Pro Tip: The effectiveness of AI-driven content creation depends on the quality of the data you provide. We’ve all heard the phrase, “Garbage in, garbage out.” Fortunately, the converse is also true. Input a plethora of valuable information and ask specific questions to get a quality response.

There’s no such thing as too much input, especially if it’s relevant.

Here’s an example of a loaded AI prompt that can help you generate an effective customer email:

Craft a personalized email to a current customer who purchased X product in the past 3 months to help them with X issue. Check in to see if they experienced the results they were hoping for, reiterate that our company, [company name], has the knowledge and experience in X area to help them succeed, and let them know they can reach out with any questions or if we can be of additional service. Be professional without being overly formal. Don’t be stuffy or use insider language. Keep the email to X words in length and close with a warm yet professional greeting. Note: Always review and edit AI-generated content to ensure accuracy, authenticity, and alignment with your brand's voice.

4. Personalization: Building Connections Through Tailored Content

Personalized emails significantly outperform generic messages. AI enables deeper personalization by analyzing individual subscriber data to tailor content to their specific interests and behaviors.

Personalization Strategies:

  • Dynamic content: Use AI to create emails that adapt content blocks based on the recipient's preferences, past purchases, or browsing history.
  • Customized recommendations: Ask AI to suggest products or services that align with each subscriber's interests, increasing the relevance of your emails.
  • Behavioral triggers: Leverage AI to send out automated emails that are triggered by specific actions, such as cart abandonment or website visits, to engage subscribers at the right moment.

Make sure subscriber information is accurate and up-to-date for the best results!

5. Segmentation: Targeting the Right Audience with Precision

Effective segmentation allows you to send the right message to the right audience. AI enhances segmentation by analyzing various data points to group subscribers more intelligently.

Segmentation Techniques:

  • Behavior-based segmentation: Group subscribers based on their interactions, such as email opens, clicks, website visits, and purchase history. This approach helps identify engaged users, cart abandoners, and loyal customers.
  • Predictive analytics: AI can forecast future behaviors, such as the likelihood of a subscriber making a purchase or unsubscribing, allowing you to proactively address their needs.

Benefits of AI-Driven Segmentation:

  • Enhanced engagement: By delivering more relevant content, you increase the likelihood subscribers will interact with your emails.
  • Improved ROI: Targeted email campaigns are more likely to convert, maximizing the return on your marketing investment.

When you take into account all of the many benefits, it’s not surprising that 51% of marketers believe AI-supported email marketing outperforms traditional approaches.

The role of AI in email marketing is exciting! By thoughtfully integrating AI into your strategy, you can create more engaging, relevant, and successful email campaigns.
