In this day and age, many consumers prefer to shop for products and services online. It’s a great way to avoid crowds, skip lines, compare prices, and embrace the ultimate convenience hack (hello, kindred lazy spirits!).

So, when you sit down to research a potential purchase, what do you look for? Price and specifications, sure … but I’d be willing to bet you also look at customer reviews. I mean, it’s a little suspicious when you find the perfect solution after just a few minutes of searching … especially when there are no reviews. (*CUE THE ALARMS* Are you getting scammed?!)

Or, worse yet, there ARE reviews … but they all add up to a whopping one-star rating and a glaring warning. That’s something even the best price in the world can’t make up for. I mean, if Karen from Ohio didn’t like the product, why would you?

The bottom line is that these days, it’s pretty rare for someone to make a purchase or sign up for a service without checking the reviews online first. Reviews on social media, Google, Yelp, or other sites can have a big impact on whether a potential client chooses to work with you and your company. In this respect, reviews should be considered part of your lead generation and marketing strategy.

So, let’s take a closer look at why online reviews are essential for business growth (especially in the big 2-0-2-6). Then, we’ll share a few tips on how to ask your clients for reviews, plus a free downloadable resource to get you started!

1. Reviews Build Trust Before Customers Ever Contact You

Online reviews are the biggest source of social proof your company can have.

Direct customer feedback in the form of reviews builds trust by showing curious newcomers that other people have already taken a chance on your business and lived to tell the tale. We’re all much more likely to buy from a company if others (even complete strangers) say the product or company is a good one.

In fact, reviews have become so much a part of how we make our buying decisions that, these days, we’re more likely to consult online reviews when we’re checking out a new business than anything or anyone else — even our friends and family! (Sorry, Mom … 😬).

In case you think I’m overstating the importance of reviews for social proof, check out these statistics from Capital One Shopping:

  • More than 99% of American consumers read online reviews before making purchases
  • 97% of consumers read online reviews for a local business before even visiting
  • 85% of consumers are hesitant to consider a product without online reviews
  • 71% of shoppers begin their consumer research with Google reviews

What To Do if You Receive a Bad Review

social proofOn the flip side, a whopping 86% of people will hesitate to do business with a company that has negative online reviews! This doesn’t mean they definitely won’t buy from you, though — it just means they’ll think twice. That makes it all the more important to respond quickly and appropriately to any negative reviews you receive.

A timely and appropriate response shows that you care about the experience your customers have with your business. I know it can be hard to confront Karen from Ohio with a smile, but taking the time to respond to criticism in a positive way will go a long way with potential customers.

And yes, I have more numbers for you:

  • 73% of unhappy customers are willing to give your business a second chance if your response solves their problem

  • 54% of unhappy customers will update their negative rating and review to reflect that they’ve had a much more positive second experience with your brand

I know that was a lot of statistics to throw at you — but at the end of the day, the takeaway is pretty simple: If people like what they see in your reviews, they’re much more likely to trust your company over the competition.

2. Reviews Help You Get Found Online

stand out online

Having a steady stream of reviews also makes your company more likely to show up when consumers are searching online. Google, ChatGPT, Claude, and other search engines all have their own algorithms and ways of determining which businesses to highlight, but every one of them values fresh, original content — and customer reviews fall into that category.

For local searches, Google considers factors like relevance, distance, and prominence when determining which businesses appear in results. The number of reviews your business has and your overall rating can contribute to prominence, meaning companies with lots of positive reviews rank higher with Google than those that have no reviews at all.

And in 2026, traditional search engines aren’t the only ones helping customers discover businesses.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on improving your visibility in AI-powered search experiences, like Google’s “AI Overviews” and ChatGPT. These answer engines scan content on the internet for clear, concise information they can use to answer a user’s question.

Detailed reviews provide more of that information by naturally connecting your business with the products or services you offer, the problems you solve, and the experiences you provide. When those connections appear consistently across reviews, they help answer engines better understand what your business is known for — and when it may be relevant to recommend it in an answer.

Think of It Like This:

You run a barbershop based in Minnesota. Let’s call it Wild Fig Barbershop.

You’ve just finished giving Adam Smith the best haircut of his life, so Mr. Smith takes to Yelp to leave a glowing review. It reads, “Wild Fig Barbershop gives the best haircuts in Minnesota. I had a fantastic experience.”

Later that day, John Doe asks ChatGPT to find him the “best barbershop for haircuts in Minnesota.”

As ChatGPT scours the internet for relevant information to answer John’s question, it may come across Mr. Smith’s review. Suddenly, Wild Fig Barbershop is being associated with some very useful phrases: barbershop, haircuts, Minnesota, best, and fantastic experience.

Now that ChatGPT has information suggesting Wild Fig Barbershop could be the answer to John Doe’s demand, it points John in your direction.

John Doe books an appointment.

And Adam Smith’s review just helped bring you a brand-new customer.

💡It can be tricky to understand the constantly-evolving algorithms in today’s day and age! To learn more about how AI is impacting search, check out our article: How AI Is Impacting Search, and How To Optimize Your Website for AEO and GEO.

Whether people are Googling or asking AI, a consistent influx of fresh reviews from your customers will help your business rank higher with search engines, making you more visible online and easier for potential customers to find.

3. Reviews Can Increase Revenue

The power of online reviews doesn’t stop once you’ve got someone through your door (or, for all you online entrepreneurs, to your website). Positive reviews build consumer confidence in your company, which results in more sales.

I hope you’re all numbers-brained today, because I’ve got some more statistics to show why online reviews are essential for your bottom line.

According to Capital One Shopping:

  • Displaying customer reviews can boost overall sales by 19.8%

  • Businesses that display at least five reviews see a 270% conversion increase

And according to SOCi Research:

  • By improving their overall rating by just one star, businesses experience a 44% conversion boost

  • Simply taking the time to respond to all reviews — good or bad — tends to give businesses a 16.4% conversion improvement

  • For every 10 new reviews, businesses see a 2.8% conversion boost, on average

And one very simple equation, courtesy of us:

  • Happy Customers + Reviews = $$$

Numbers dump over. 😎*Mic drop.*

4. Reviews Give You Valuable Feedback

Get feedback

Customer reviews can help you discover where you excel … and where you don’t.

While no one wants negative reviews, if you take the opportunity to learn from them, they can actually be quite valuable. Knowing what problems your customers are experiencing with your business gives you the chance to fix those issues, make amends with the customer, and invite them to try you again.

And, like we mentioned before, make sure to respond to every review — positive and negative alike! Offering personalized responses to reviews lends your company a friendly online presence and shows you are open to feedback.

5. Reviews Help Generate Leads

lead generation

Online reviews can also help turn curious searchers into potential customers.

Since people use websites like Google, Yelp, Facebook, and LinkedIn to conduct research before they buy, these sites are powerful lead generation sources. Ranking high on sites like these will help you stand out to potential clients and show them you’re worth their time and money.

🤔Think about it … A potential customer searches for a product or service and eventually narrows their options down to just two businesses. You and a competitor.

Your competitor has 12 reviews and a 3-star rating.

You have 400 reviews and a 4.5-star rating.

That difference may be enough to convince the potential customer to at least click on your website. To poke around a little. Even to fill out a form, or hand over their email. The bottom line is, they want to learn more.

Remember to track where your website traffic and leads are coming from — you may find that your online reviews are doing more lead-generating legwork than you thought!

That’s one reason why we always recommend HubSpot to our clients. It can help you follow a lead’s journey, including how they found your website, which pages they visited, and which “Call Us!” button finally won them over. How To Ask Your Customers for Reviews (Without Being Awkward)

giphy-Sep-01-2026-03-13-31-1912-PMIt can be hard to know how to ask your customers to write you reviews without sounding like you’re begging for compliments.

This part of owning a business always reminds me of that saying, “Closed mouths don’t get fed.” I mean, without being asked, how often do you take the time to sit down and write a review? Nine times out of ten, you’d just be writing, “Product works exactly as expected.” Riveting stuff.

But those reviews are valuable, too! They help balance out the inevitable, occasional one-star review — not only that, but they also give potential customers a more realistic picture of your product or service. After all, not everyone needs something they feel passionately enough about to write a five-paragraph love letter. Sometimes, they just want something that gets the job done.

So, how do you get those happy-but-not-necessarily-shouting-it-from-the-rooftops customers to speak up? Here are a few tips for asking for reviews without sounding desperate:

  1. Time it wisely. The ideal time to ask for a review is right after your customer experiences a success with your product or business. This is when they’ll be most excited and have the most to say.

But the end of the quarter or year can also be a great time to send out requests, since many companies are reviewing how their businesses have done over the past several months or year.

  1. Grab their attention by offering an incentive for submitting a review — like a gift card for coffee or some company swag. Offering a little something in return for their time can convince people to take action.

  2. Make it easy. Include a direct link to the site you want them to leave a review on right in your email, so all they have to do is click and start writing.

The Most Important Thing of All: The Human Touch

If there’s one final reason why online reviews are essential in 2026, it’s this: reviews give your business something technology can’t replicate. A human voice. They remind potential customers that there are real people behind your brand, and real people who trust it.
